How it is calculated

CPF comes out of every payslip. Income tax does not: IRAS sends one bill the following year, which you can pay in up to 12 instalments by GIRO.

  • Your CPF is a share of your monthly pay up to S$8,000, plus the same share of your bonus. Your employer pays its own share on top.
  • CPF is charged on total wages up to S$102,000 a year. A bonus above what is left after 12 months of pay is free of CPF.
  • Income tax is worked out on your yearly pay minus your CPF and the earned income relief, taxed at IRAS resident rates.
  • The total CPF is rounded to the nearest dollar and your share is rounded down, as CPF Board's rules require.
  • The optional reliefs are NSman, parent, spouse, qualifying child, SRS and CPF cash top-up relief, at IRAS amounts, all within the S$80,000 relief cap.
  • Self-help group contributions (CDAC, MBMF, SINDA or ECF) use CPF Board's monthly rates. The bonus month uses the rate for that month's total pay.
  • The calculator leaves out Working Mother's Child Relief, grandparent caregiver, life insurance and disability reliefs, and any tax rebate announced later. Course Fees Relief ended from YA 2026.

Foundific calculations. Graduated rates assume the employee and employer both use them. Non-residents pay 15% on employment income, or resident rates if higher.

  • Foreigners and new PRs pay less CPF, so less of their pay is relieved from tax and they pay more tax.
  • You are usually a tax resident if you stay or work in Singapore for 183 days or more in the year.

Ways to pay less tax

  • Contributions to the Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) are relieved up to S$15,300 a year for Citizens and PRs, and S$35,700 for foreigners.
  • CPF cash top-ups are relieved up to S$8,000 a year for your own account, and another S$8,000 for family members.
  • Enter parent, spouse and NSman reliefs under "More reliefs" in the calculator to see the tax saved.
  • Total personal reliefs are capped at S$80,000 a year.
  • Your marginal rate tells you what each extra relief dollar saves. The calculator shows it with your result.

Common questions

How much CPF is deducted from my salary?

20% of your monthly pay up to S$8,000 if you are 55 or below, so at most S$1,600 a month. Your employer adds 17%. The rates fall from age 55.

What is the take-home pay on a S$6,000 salary in Singapore?

S$4,800 a month after the 20% CPF deduction for a citizen under 55. Income tax comes on top once a year; on S$6,000 with a one-month bonus it is about S$2,050 for the year.

Why is my tax not on my payslip?

Singapore does not deduct income tax from monthly pay. Your employer reports your pay to IRAS, and IRAS sends you a tax bill around May of the following year.

Is the 13th month (AWS) a bonus here?

Yes. CPF treats the 13th month and performance bonuses as additional wages. Add them together in months of pay.

Where does my CPF go?

Into your Ordinary, Special or Retirement, and MediSave accounts, in shares that depend on your age. It stays your money for housing, healthcare and retirement.

Does my employer's CPF count as my pay?

It is part of what your employer spends on you, but it is not in your gross pay and is not taxed. Job offers usually quote gross pay without it.

Why is my take-home lower in the month I get my bonus?

CPF is charged on the bonus too, up to the Additional Wage ceiling. Income tax is not deducted monthly in Singapore, so the bonus month only loses CPF.

Is income tax deducted from my salary?

Not usually. Most employees pay IRAS directly, in one sum or by GIRO instalments, in the year after they earn the income.

Do I pay CPF on overtime and allowances?

Yes. Overtime and most allowances are Ordinary Wages and attract CPF up to the S$8,000 monthly ceiling.
