How a bonus is taxed

A bonus pays CPF up to the yearly ceiling, and the income tax on it is the extra tax for the year it adds, at your top tax rate.

  • CPF: charged on bonuses (additional wages) up to S$102,000 minus your ordinary wages for the year, counting monthly pay up to S$8,000. Above that, no CPF is due.
  • Income tax: the tax for the year with the bonus, minus the tax without it. Tax is not taken from the bonus; it is in your bill the following year.
  • Reliefs: CPF relief on the bonus and earned income relief are included. Other reliefs lower the tax on your regular pay first.

Why high earners keep a larger share

  • The Additional Wage ceiling: CPF on bonuses is charged only up to S$102,000 minus the Ordinary Wages that attracted CPF in the year.
  • At S$8,000 a month, Ordinary Wages use S$96,000 of that, so CPF is charged on only S$6,000 of any bonus: S$1,200 from you.
  • Above that, the rest of the bonus is taxed but not charged CPF, which is why the share kept rises with bonus size.

Common questions

How much tax will I pay on my bonus in Singapore?

The extra tax is your bonus, after CPF, taxed at your top income tax rate. On S$5,000 a month with a S$10,000 bonus, it is about S$560 for a citizen under 55.

Is CPF deducted from my bonus?

Yes, at your usual CPF rate, until your pay for the year reaches S$102,000, counting monthly pay up to S$8,000. A citizen under 55 pays 20% of the bonus up to that ceiling.

Is the 13th month (AWS) taxed differently from a bonus?

No. Both are additional wages for CPF and both are income for tax. Add them together.

Why is there no CPF on part of my bonus?

Because of the S$102,000 annual salary ceiling. At S$10,000 a month, 12 months of pay count as S$96,000, so CPF is charged on only S$6,000 of the bonus.

Is a bonus taxed at a higher rate?

No. It is added to your year's income and taxed at the same progressive rates. A large bonus can move part of your income into a higher band.

When is the tax on my bonus paid?

In the following year, with the rest of your income tax. The bonus month itself only loses CPF.
