Your email
Thank you email you can copy
Thank them, name one thing from the conversation, link it to what you can do, and say you are still interested.
Subject: Thank you – [role] interview Dear [Interviewer's name], Thank you for meeting me on [day] to discuss the [role] position at [company]. I enjoyed hearing about [one thing you discussed]. [How you can help with it.] I am keen on the role and happy to send anything else you need. Regards, [Your name] [Phone]
Follow-up email
Send this once the date they gave has passed. If they gave no date, wait about a week.
Subject: Following up – [role] interview Dear [Interviewer's name], I hope you are well. I am following up on my interview on [day] for the [role] position. I am still very interested in joining [company]. Could you let me know where things stand, or when I might expect to hear? Thank you for your time. Regards, [Your name]
What makes it work
- Send it the same day or the next morning, while the conversation is fresh.
- One email for each interviewer. Change the detail you mention, since they may compare notes.
- Be specific. One real point from the interview shows you listened. A list of your strengths does not.
- Fix a weak answer, briefly. If you missed something in the interview, add one sentence with the better answer.
- Use the email they used. If the recruiter arranged the interview, copy them or send it through them.
- Check names and titles. Spell the interviewer's name exactly as in their email signature.
After the email
- One follow-up, then wait. A second reminder within a few days rarely helps.
- If an offer comes, check it against the median pay for the job before you reply. To ask for more, use the salary negotiation email.
- Two offers? The job offer comparison calculator shows the difference after CPF and tax.
- To accept or decline, use the job offer acceptance email.
Common questions
Does a thank you email make a difference?
It rarely decides the result alone, but it is a chance to repeat your interest and add a point you missed. It takes five minutes.
Email or LinkedIn message?
Email. Use LinkedIn only if you have no email address for the interviewer.
What if the interview was online?
Send the same email. Mention the call instead of the meeting.
How long should I wait before following up?
Until the date they gave you has passed. If they gave none, about a week after the interview.
Should I follow up after a rejection?
A short reply thanking them and asking to be considered for future roles is fine. Ask for feedback once; many companies do not give it.
