What does an engineer (civil, mechanical, electrical) do?
An engineer in civil, mechanical or electrical work designs, builds, tests and maintains physical systems.
Civil engineers handle structures, drainage and roads. Mechanical engineers handle machines, pumps, air-conditioning and plant. Electrical engineers handle power supply, lighting, controls and wiring.
In Singapore, you could work for a consultancy, a main contractor, a government agency, a manufacturer or a facilities operator. You usually sit in a project or design team and report to a senior or principal engineer.
You work with architects, other engineering disciplines, draughtspeople, contractors, site supervisors and clients. Safety officers and regulators also review your work. Engineers who sign off designs may need registration with the Professional Engineers Board (PEB).
What the work involves
- Draw and update designs in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or Revit, and check them against calculations.
- Run calculations and simulations in MATLAB, Python or spreadsheets to test loads, flows or electrical demand.
- Review contractor drawings and material submissions, and reply with comments.
- Visit sites or plants to inspect installation, witness tests and record defects.
- Write reports, specifications and progress updates for clients and project managers.
- Check designs and site work against Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) requirements and the Singapore Standards that apply.

- Write scripts in Python or MATLAB to speed up repeated calculations and data checks.
Requirements
- A degree in civil, mechanical, electrical or a related engineering field, or a diploma for assistant engineer roles.
- 0 to 2 years of experience for junior roles. Mid-level roles often ask for 3 to 6 years.
- Working skill in AutoCAD plus one discipline tool, such as SolidWorks or Revit.
- Basic MATLAB or Python for analysis is increasingly asked for.
- Knowledge of WSH requirements and the Singapore Standards that apply to your work.
- PEB registration for roles that sign off designs, or a clear plan to work towards it.
Engineer (civil, mechanical, electrical) career path
Most engineers in Singapore start as graduate or junior engineers and move up through design ownership to team leadership.
Titles vary by employer.
Graduate engineer
Entry
You work under supervision, prepare drawings and calculations, and learn the codes, tools and site practice.
Engineer
Mid
You own the design of a package or system, deal with contractors directly and begin to work towards PEB registration.
Senior engineer
Senior
You lead the design on projects, check the work of juniors and handle client and authority queries.
Principal engineer or engineering manager
Lead
You run a team or a large project, manage budgets and risk, and often sign off designs as a registered professional engineer.
Head of engineering or director
Head
You set technical standards, manage the department and are accountable for safety and delivery across projects.
The titles are ones commonly used in Singapore; employers may name the levels differently.

Engineer (civil, mechanical, electrical) interview questions
We wrote these questions from the skills this job needs. They are not an official question bank.
Pick a design you worked on. How did you check it against the Singapore Standards or codes that applied?
What a good answer covers
- Names the actual standard or code used and why it applied
- Explains the load cases, safety factors or design limits chosen
- Describes how a second person checked the calculation
- Mentions how assumptions and changes were recorded
How do you set up an AutoCAD drawing so a contractor can build from it without confusion?
What a good answer covers
- Uses consistent layers, line types and title blocks
- Sets scale, units and annotation correctly
- Uses external references to keep disciplines coordinated
- Tracks revisions with clear clouds and dates
- Checks the drawing against the calculation before issue
How do you build a SolidWorks assembly that survives a design change?
What a good answer covers
- Plans a sensible mate structure and avoids over-constraining
- Uses configurations or design tables for variants
- Considers top-down design with shared sketches
- Runs interference and clearance checks
- Keeps files and part numbers under version control
Two disciplines clash in the Revit model. How do you find it and get it fixed?
What a good answer covers
- Runs clash detection on the combined model
- Sorts clashes by severity and location
- Raises the issue with the other discipline and agrees who moves
- Records the decision in an issue log
- Rechecks the model after the update
You have raw sensor data from a pump test. How would you analyse it in MATLAB?
What a good answer covers
- Imports the data and cleans out bad readings
- Filters noise and states the method used
- Calculates flow, head and efficiency
- Plots the performance curve against the supplier curve

Common questions about an engineer (civil, mechanical, electrical) job
What is CAD?
CAD stands for computer-aided design. It is software used to draw and model parts, buildings or systems on screen. Engineers use it to produce drawings that contractors and manufacturers build from.
Which CAD software do engineers in Singapore use?
AutoCAD is common for 2D drawings across all three disciplines. Mechanical engineers often use SolidWorks for 3D parts and assemblies. Building and civil teams use Revit for BIM models.
Do I need PE registration to work as an engineer?
Not always, especially early in your career. Registration with the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) is needed for work that a professional engineer must sign off. The PEB site lists current requirements.
What is the difference between civil, mechanical and electrical engineers?
Civil engineers work on structures, roads and water systems. Mechanical engineers work on machines, plant and heating or cooling systems. Electrical engineers work on power, lighting and control systems.
